Introducing Koru: A New Era of Loyalty at Air New Zealand
In an exciting development for travel enthusiasts and families alike, Air New Zealand is launching Koru, a fresh and innovative loyalty programme that promises to redefine the way travelers experience rewards. For almost three decades, Airpoints has been central to how the airline acknowledges its passengers, but with Koru, Air New Zealand aims to elevate the loyalty experience into something that resonates deeper with members.
What is Koru?
According to Nikhil Ravishankar, the airline's CEO, Koru symbolizes care, connection, and constant renewal. More than just a name, it's a commitment to creating a sense of pride and belonging among travelers, particularly those who venture far from home. “We’ve listened to what matters most to our members,” Ravishankar states, emphasizing how Koru reflects the feedback from their five million strong member base.
Koru Black: Exclusive Rewards for Frequent Flyers
The crown jewel of the Koru programme is undoubtedly Koru Black, a tier crafted for Air New Zealand’s most dedicated flyers. To reach this coveted status, members must earn over 3,200 Status Points within a year, with a minimum of 1,920 from eligible flights. Those who qualify before April 2026 will be rewarded with special privileges that enhance their travel experience.
Koru Black members can expect an array of exciting benefits, including recognition upgrades, expedited security screening at Auckland Domestic Airport, and valet parking vouchers—just in time for holiday season travel. Moreover, starting April 2026, new features like Koru Circle will allow them to share the benefits of their status with family and friends, making travel experiences more inclusive.
A Full Programme Refresh
The transition to Koru involves more than just a name change; it encapsulates an entire overhaul of tier structures and rewards. For instance, the base tier now known as Koru Bronze ensures that every member feels recognized, paving the way for more personal engagement and rewards. Koru Silver and Koru Gold have also been refreshed to deliver a more coherent travel journey, making it easier for members to climb the ranks and enjoy richer benefits.
Traveling with Meaning: The Importance of Connection
For many travelers, the journey is not just about the destination. Traveling is often a shared experience, laden with memories made with family and friends. Koru Circle, a newly introduced feature of the loyalty program, acknowledges this by enabling Koru Black members to extend their premium benefits to loved ones. Whether through “Family Packages” or “Friends Packages,” the aim is to foster deeper connections on every journey.
What Lies Ahead for Koru?
Air New Zealand's pivot towards Koru represents more than just a change in program; it’s indicative of a broader trend where personalization and meaningful interactions in travel loyalty are becoming paramount. As the airline prepares to introduce additional partners and exclusive ways to utilize Airpoints, members can expect an expanding universe of rewards and experiences tailored to their needs.
This journey of transformation is ongoing, and Ravishankar is eager to further enrich the Koru experience. “We’re incredibly grateful for our members' loyalty and can’t wait to welcome them into this new era,” he adds, calling for an era where air travel reflects the essence of connection and community.
