Transforming Plastic Waste into Community Solutions in Vietnam
In the heart of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, a unique initiative led by the Anh Duong Center is turning the pressing issue of plastic waste into an opportunity for education and community empowerment. Rather than viewing plastic waste merely as an environmental challenge, the center recognizes its potential to foster learning, create livelihoods, and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Linking Education and Environmentalism
The approach of the Anh Duong Center is notably innovative; it intertwines environmental awareness with children's education. By empowering students to act as environmental ambassadors, the center transforms waste collection into a productive community activity. Students are invited to sort and bring in plastic waste during school events, fostering a culture of recycling. In return, families receive small incomes for their contributions, thereby reinforcing the interconnectedness of sustainability and community support. Remarkably, this initiative has already led to the recycling of nearly nine tons of plastic waste.
The Power of Recycled Products
Through collaborations with technical partners, the Anh Duong Center has successfully transformed collected plastic into essential school supplies. To date, they have produced 260 sets of desks and chairs, 44 trash bins, and 30 bookshelves, all made primarily from recycled plastic. These products are functional assets for local schools, yet they also serve as powerful symbols of the circular economy. Beyond schools, the reuse of plastic has extended to creating eco-houses, with roofing sheets made from one ton of recycled material, illustrating how innovation can directly benefit the local economy and environment.
Classrooms as Environmental Champions
Each classroom outfitted with recycled furniture helps eliminate approximately 500 kg of plastic waste from the environment. This transformation not only supports students’ educational experiences but also cultivates a cleaner village environment. As students embrace their roles in sustainability, ripple effects emerge—pride in their community, cleaner living spaces, and enhanced awareness surrounding environmental stewardship.

The journey of the Anh Duong Center, recognized by the 2025 EXO Foundation Sustainability Awards, is far from over. The center's ambition is to replicate its model across more schools and communities in the Mekong Delta, promoting a collective commitment to sustainability. Everyone can contribute—students, parents, local authorities, and organizations are all vital to cultivating a greener, more caring Vietnam.
