Jamaica is taking significant strides toward a sustainable tourism future, aligning its tourism sector with a broader economic transformation agenda. As highlighted in a recent address by the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, new legislative frameworks and strategic priorities are being developed to enhance resilience and inclusivity in the sector.
Empowering Workers through Legislative Reforms
One of the standout initiatives is the modernization of the legislative tourism framework. This includes the anticipated Tourist Board Act, which aims to delineate the strategic functions of the Jamaica Tourist Board in our modern global economy. Equally significant is the Travel Agency Act, set to regulate Jamaica's outbound travel market in accordance with international standards—making travel easier for everyone.
Additionally, reforms are now underway addressing gratuity and income structures to better compensate our tourism workers. This systemic change is crucial in providing a stable livelihood for the thousands employed in this vibrant sector.
Moreover, the Tourism Workers Pension Scheme has seen more than 11,000 workers enroll, with plans for expanded benefits that will ensure long-term financial security for our dedicated tourism personnel.
Initiatives Driving Excellence in Service
The Ministry has spotlighted the remarkable efforts of its tourism agencies, such as the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo). They have trained over 1,800 workers in essential customer service and safety practices, ensuring that tourists enjoy a world-class experience. At the Montego Bay Convention Centre, which recently hosted a whopping 221 business events and welcomed more than 73,000 attendees, the revenue has soared to J$312 million—a 65% increase year-over-year! Promoting Cultural Pride through the Jam-Iconic Experience Initiative
